TRAVELLING STORIES: ON THE ROAD WITH WORLD WANDERER GREGOR SIEBOECK
Have you ever wondered what happens when you close the front door behind you and just keep walking? Not just for a weekend, but for years? We talked to Gregor Sieböck – a man who has been exploring the world on foot since 2003 and has learned that the most valuable discoveries often lie off the beaten track.
The call of the wide world
“One day I just set off on foot,” Gregor recalls with a smile. What began in Austria led him along ancient pilgrimage routes across Europe to the Atlantic Ocean. But that was just the beginning. From the lonely expanses of Latin America to the temple mountains of Japan and on to the untouched wilderness of New Zealand – Gregor traded the relentless pace of modern life for the rhythm of his own steps.
Today, he is no longer concerned with rigid plans or reaching a destination. Gregor is a seeker who makes new decisions at every crossroads. He seeks the fullness of the moment, a connection with the earth, and the "magic of time."

The southernmost hammock spot on Earth
On his travels, Gregor often travels with minimal luggage. His constant companion in his 30-liter backpack? A Ticket to the Moon hammock.
One of his most impressive experiences took him to Isla Navarino, in the far south of South America. On the southernmost hiking trail in the world, the Dientes de Navarino, he searched for a place to sleep in the last light of evening.
“A cold wind picked up, coming directly from Antarctica, which was less than 1,000 kilometers away as the crow flies,” he recounts. “I finally found two trees in a small southern beech forest. I strung up my hammock and was simply blissful – with a view towards Cape Horn. ”
Interestingly, the hammock enabled him to complete the five-day trek in just two. Why? Because hammock spots were so scarce in the barren landscape that he simply kept walking until he found the perfect trees. "Ticket to the Moon hammocks really do give you wings," he says. Thanks to this pace, he reached civilization just in time before a violent Antarctic storm hit the island.

Anyone who lives outdoors for so long develops a sixth sense. This probably saved Gregor's health during an overnight stay in the Lobau wetlands near Vienna.
Morning sun after a restless night
After a long hike, he searched for a place to spend the night by the beam of his headlamp. He had already perfectly strung his hammock between two trees when an uneasy feeling came over him. Although the spot looked objectively good, his inner voice told him: Move. He trusted his instincts, packed everything up, and found new trees ten meters away. Around 4:00 a.m., he was awakened by a loud crash. A herd of wild boars charged directly over the spot where he had originally intended to lie down. "If I hadn't listened to my heart, I probably would have felt the boar's tusks in my kidney area," he recalls.
Instead, the next morning he safely and gratefully enjoyed the magical light of the morning sun before continuing his journey towards the Carpathians.
