How to Reactivate Waterproofing on Your Tarp

At Ticket to the Moon, we believe in long-lasting products that can stand up to the test of time. However, even the best gear may need a little care after years of use. If you own one of our Lightest or Fullmoon Tarps and have used it regularly over years, you may notice that the waterproof coating—especially around the seams—has begun to wear off. No need to worry! You can easily restore its waterproof properties.

How to Reactivate Your Tarp’s Waterproof Coating

After extended use, especially in outdoor conditions, it's normal for the waterproof coating to degrade slightly. The good news? This is something you can easily fix at home.

Step 1: Soak Your Tarp We recommend using Nikwax TX Direct Wash-In to restore the water-repellent qualities of your tarp. Follow these simple steps:

  • Soak your tarp in a bucket with the Nikwax solution, as per the product’s instructions.
  • After soaking, gently wipe it down to prevent streaks from forming.
  • Let the tarp dry fully before using it again.

This process will bring back that waterproof shield your tarp had when it was brand new.

Don’t Forget the Seams!

The seams of your tarp are stitched with thread that includes cotton components, which help to seal it when exposed to moisture. Over time, if the tarp has been packed away damp, that cotton can break down, compromising the seam’s waterproofing. Here’s how to handle this:

Step 2: Seal the Seams To reseal the seams, we suggest using a Silicone Seam Sealer or Gear Aid Seam Grip. These products help repair and reinforce the waterproofing at the stitching points. Here’s how:

  • Apply the seam sealer along the stitching, ensuring full coverage.
  • Allow it to cure according to the product instructions before using your tarp again.  You can find the application instructions here.

By doing this, you’ll restore the integrity of your tarp and ensure it remains waterproof for many more adventures to come.

Why Regular Maintenance Matters

Taking a little time to maintain your tarp can drastically extend its lifespan and performance. With a bit of attention every few years, you’ll enjoy reliable waterproof protection that lasts, keeping you dry and comfortable in the great outdoors.
